The Brick Q and A Session – Martin Divilly

  1. FULL NAME
    Martin Divilly
  2. BIRTHPLACE
    Galway
  3. WHEN DID YOU JOIN GTC AND WHY?
I think it was 2012. I did two sprints in my first year for the craic with a couple of mates after giving up the fags, and then just loved it. So I signed up for the first Ironman 70.3 Galway and joined the club then.
  4. OCCUPATION
Officially retired since last year, but I can’t stand still, so I find some way to hurt myself most days.
  5. PREVIOUS SPORTS
    Hurling, badminton and snooker.
  6. SWIM / BIKE / RUN: Which do you prefer and why?
Definitely the bike. If I’m not on a bike, I’m probably washing a bike, spraying a bike or thinking about a long spin on my bike!
  7. FAVOURITE EVENT
Lost Sheep in Kenmare, 70.3 distance, or Hell of the West in Kilkee, Olympic distance. Both are hard, honest races.
  8. SPORTING CLAIM TO FAME: Name any sporting achievement you are most proud of
My first competitive century break in snooker was special to me.In triathlon, I’d say winning the Tribesman 70.3 distance in 2018 was a great day. Bike-wise, winning the Western Challenge 525km ultra in 2022 was another big one. Also, beating Ruaidhrí Geraghty in Hell of the West 2024 😅. I will never let him forget!
  9. THREE MUSIC TRACKS THAT POWER YOUR TRAINING SESSIONS
Zone 2 stuff like Guns N’ Roses, Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers, but it has to all be live!Race-face sessions are Rage Against the Machine, Alice in Chains and Metallica. Master of Puppets is the go-to track for a bike test on repeat.
  10. YOUR ALL-TIME SPORTING HEROES AND WHY?
Andreas Raelert, for sure. Probably the best Ironman athlete to never win in Kona.My first time watching a clip of Ironman on YouTube, it was him chasing down Macca for the lead and the background music was Def Leppard’s Hysteria. It was so cool, and he should have kicked on and won, but anyway.I met him in Mallorca when doing the 70.3 race, and both himself and his brother Michael were just so sound. Legends, both of them!
  11. YOUR GTC HERO, AND WHY?
A no-brainer. My wingman, Mr Geraghty, for sure. He’s been flying the GTC flag for about 20 years. Multiple race winner, sub-9 hour Ironman, and wore the GTC kit racing Kona, Hawaii.
  12. A SONG THAT SUMS YOU UP
Can’t Stop, Red Hot Chili Peppers.
